Mário de Carvalho is a hugely influential, award-winning contemporary Portuguese author. Born in Lisbon in 1944, he was formerly a lawyer and politically active in the opposition of the Estado Novo. He has written prolifically since the late 1970s in various genres, including novels, short stories, and theatre; as well as inventing his own genre, thecronovolema. His first novel to be translated into English was A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening (winner of the Pegasus prize), and the translation of these stories follows the publication of Professor Pfiglzz an His Strange Companion by Cacanet Press.
