3. Robert Olen Butler - Workshop: “Creating Fictional Art”

The workshop will focus on the fundamentals of the creative process for any fiction writers, beginning or advanced, who aspire to create enduring literature. We will address such issues as what is art; what is distinctive about the way the artist addresses the world, the inner self, and the objects to be created; and what are the essential characteristics of fiction as an art form. And, perhaps most importantly, how does the writer maintain creative control of the story writing process. workshop 3

robert Olen Butler

Robert Olen Butler has published sixteen novels and six volumes of short stories, one of which, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He has also published a volume of his lectures on the creative process, From Where You Dream. He was the 2013 recipient of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding Achievement in American Literature. Among his many other accolades are the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction, and two National Magazine Awards in Fiction. His work has been translated into twenty-one languages, including A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain in Chinese (Shanghai 99, 2014). He teaches creative writing at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
